My Lone Journey to Suginami Animation Museum.

Reporter : TEDJA AGNES MICHELLE

  1. After you reach the north exit of Ogikubo Station, take the Kantou Bus. It will take about 8 minutes to reach the museum. (Or you can just walk from there. But it will take more than 20 minutes) Pick the number 0 or 1 (the terminal number). You will get off at Ogikubo Keisatsusho mae. The bus fare is 210 yen. And you can only use coins here. Please be careful because there will be no announcement in English inside the bus.
After you get off at Ogikubo Keisatsusho mae, turn left and at the first intersection, turn right. And you will see the Suginami Animation Museum building.

  2. Suginami Animation Museum opens at 10 o’clock. That’s why I arrived at 9:58. “OKAY! Let’s go in!!” Wait a second? There’s nobody there. On top of that, there’s nothing related to Anime. I took a look at the elevator on the left side. The museum is one the 3rd floor. Sheesh. That’s so confusing. I went to the 3rd floor and found myself dumbfounded. It’s so different from the 1st floor! There were a lot of Anime characters~

  3. There was a computer right beside the elevator. “Let’s make our own “PARAPARA” animation” (Para Para animation is the animation you write on the paper and you flip the papers to see the animation) Then, the staff called me. She gave me the museum pamphlet. On the right side of the room there were a place to try recording your voice (Afureko), Digital Workshop and a lot of explanations about the Anime industry.
  4. Explanations about the making of Anime. I didn’t even know that Animes are created like that!

  5. I tried recording my voice for a one scene of Astro Boy. I came to hate my own voice *laughs* Seiyuu is a difficult work. Oh, and you can also try to edit some sound effects here.
  6. In the Digital Workshop you can use the computer to try some coloring and editing. Astro Boy will guide you so you don’t have to worry~ *laughs* And you can also try tracing some drawings here. I love Black Jack so I traced a drawing of him =3=d
7. I went upstairs and saw a library on the right. There are tons of old Animes and new Animes. I really really want to spend the whole day just to watch Animes but, yeah, I’m on duty… so let’s just do it next time.
On this floor, there are many story boards, rough sketches from some famous Animes like Doraemon, Astro Boy, Tetsujin 28. And I can’t take pictures in this floor so please come here if you want to see them~
And, there was an announcement. Tetsujin 28 was on the air. So I headed to the Anime Theater. It was a 25 minute one episode. Hrmm…. I could feel the oldness of the animation but it was interesting!
8. Lastly, I bought some souvenirs~ An Astro Boy memo pad! And! A Namisuke pressed coin! (I wanted some Black Jack goods lol) By the way, Namisuke is Suginami’s mascot character.
  9. I went out the museum… But, I was curious of the Shinto shrine in front of the museum. It was so clean and it was so relaxing too.. Maybe it’s because it was raining, there weren’t a lot of people there. And there were 2 cute cats sitting on the bench. (they were statues actually)

If you want to get home by bus, the bus stop is on the opposite side from the place you first arrived.
Summary :
Suginami Animation Museum is quite small but it has tons of information regarding Japanese Anime. The museum opens at 10 o’clock and closes at 18 o’clock. The museum won’t be open generally on Mondays but be sure to check the home page first before you visit. There is no entrance fee. It’s practically free!!.
I really recommend this museum for people who want to become animators or people who want to watch Anime for free or people who are interested in this place after reading this article I wrote. If you want to watch Anime, please look at the catalog beforehand to find whether the Anime you want to watch is there or not.
People who have free time, people who want a change of pace, you can go to Ogikubo Hachiman Shrine right in front of the museum.
